Wissembourg **
This small town, the most northerly in the Bas-Rhin, has emerged miraculously unscathed from a history full of sieges, disasters and acts of war - an 1870 battle is named after it. Take a stroll along the ramparts, through the old quarters or the ‘Little Venice’ quarter, and you'll discover more than 70 houses built before 1700. The imposing church of St-Pierre-et-St-Paul stands out in this gentle town. It is the second largest Gothic church in Alsace, after Strasbourg Cathedral.
